Exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Zviad Gamsakhurdia

On October 28, at 18:00, an exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the first President of Georgia (1991-1992), one of the leaders of the national liberation movement (1973-1990), translator, Doctor of Philology and National Hero of Georgia - Zviad Gamsakhurdia will open at the Palace of Arts.

The exhibition will present unique video, audio and archival documents preserved at the Palace of Arts, which will introduce the general public to many interesting and previously unknown stories related to Zviad Gamsakhurdia's political and public activities.

For the first time in history, along with unique posters, photographs, and manuscripts from the museum’s collections displayed in the exhibition halls, visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to see unique photographs and archival documents owned by The Washington Post, depicting the political situation in Georgia in 1989-1992.

The event will also feature the presentation of the exhibition catalog, which is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of President Gamsakhurdia’s birth and which, along with important facts reflecting Gamsakhurdia’s political activities, brings together rare footage of the mass crackdown on supporters of the then-President of Georgia from January 3 to February 2, 1992.

It is noteworthy that October 28 was specially chosen as the opening date of the exhibition. On October 28, 1990, the first democratic and multi-party elections were held in Georgia, in which the registration of participating parties and organizations was carried out not by the Soviet government, but by the Central Election Commission elected on the basis of parity. In addition, for the first time in the Soviet Empire, the elections were supervised by international observers from abroad.

The exhibition will run at the Palace of Arts until November 10.
