Mematiane: A New Scientific, Cultural, and Historical Magazine
In May 2026, a new popular science and cultural magazine titled Mematiane (“The Chronicler”) will be launched for historians, literary scholars, museum professionals, and artists. The magazine is founded by the Royal Asiatic Society of Georgia and the Union of Georgian Palace-Museums.
The first issue of Mematiane is dedicated to an outstanding Georgian woman — Ekaterine Chavchavadze-Dadiani, the last Queen of Mingrelia, marking the 210th anniversary of her birth.
In the 21st century, in an era dominated by artificial intelligence and ultra-modern technologies, it may seem that there is less and less space for printed publications devoted to history, art, and culture, especially as digital media and electronic documents become increasingly popular and practical. Nevertheless, we believe that just as the invention of book printing once gave handwritten manuscripts an even greater charm, and the rise of popular culture made classical art even more valuable, printed magazines too will gain a special significance — becoming more distinctive, engaging, and meaningful for readers interested in science, culture, and history.
The magazine has been prepared with the support of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation and is printed at the publishing facilities of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia — Sakpatenti, within the framework of the cooperation memorandum between the Art Palace of Georgia and Sakpatenti. We hope that from its very first issue, Mematiane will establish a meaningful place in the minds of its readers and become a lasting companion for those who are interested in the history of their country and its relevance to the modern world.
The Editor-in-Chief of the magazine is George Kalandia, the Managing Editor is Irakli Chitanava, and the Style Editor is Elene Salaridze. The editorial board includes Izolda Melikishvili, Davit Okujava, and David Meladze, while the magazine manager is Irakli Zambakhidze.
“By understanding history, we create the future.”
The first issue of Mematiane will be released in the second half of May and will be available for purchase in Tbilisi at the Art Palace museum shop (6 Kargareteli Street), as well as in Zugdidi at the Gamsakhurdia Presidential Center.
