Presentation of the Journal Mematiane

On October 13 at 18:00, the Art Palace of Georgia – Museum of Cultural History will host the presentation of the second issue of Mematiane (“The Chronicler”), a popular-science bilingual journal.

Mematiane is a joint project of  The Union of Georgian Palace Museums and the Georgian Royal Asiatic Society. The journal covers history, art, and cultural history, and aims to bring together, in one place, both professional research and historical and cultural material of interest to the wider public.

The first issue was dedicated to Ekaterine Chavchavadze-Dadiani, the last queen of Samegrelo, and readers received it with particular interest. The second issue is devoted to the life, scholarly work, and legacy of another outstanding Georgian scholar and public figure, Ivane Javakhishvili.

Ivane Javakhishvili’s name is inseparably linked with the development of Georgian historiography and the scientific study of Georgian history. The second issue of Mematiane will allow readers to explore the scholar’s activity from different perspectives: his era, his scholarly legacy, and the significance his works continue to have for Georgian historical and cultural consciousness today.

The idea behind Mematiane rests on the belief that, in an age of modern technology and digital media, the printed edition remains especially important. Amid the rapid spread of electronic information, books and printed journals remain a material carrier of knowledge and cultural memory, creating a special, direct connection with the reader. The journal’s goal is to take historical knowledge beyond the academic sphere and make it interesting, accessible, and relevant to the wider public, so that understanding the past can help us better comprehend the present and think about the future.

Mematiane was prepared with the support of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. It is printed at the printing facility of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia, “Sakpatenti,” under a cooperation memorandum signed between The Union of Georgian Palace Museums and Sakpatenti.

The editor-in-chief of the journal is Giorgi Kalandia.

Admission to the presentation is free!
