The Art Palace Has Acquired Another Fascinating Historical Document
George Kalandia - I acquired this document in August 2026 from an antiques dealer at London’s famous Portobello Road Antiques Market. It immediately caught my attention with its beautiful calligraphy, wax seal, and the distinctive format characteristic of eighteenth-century English legal documents.
The document is an English indenture dated 7 July 1797 - a one-year lease agreement drawn up in the 37th year of the reign of King George III. One detail is particularly noteworthy: this 1797 document makes explicit reference to the Parliament of England.
The Art Palace’s collection has therefore acquired not only a beautifully preserved eighteenth-century English manuscript document, but also a small yet tangible witness to an era when George III and private legal relationships ruled Britain were governed by laws enacted by Parliament.
